Sometimes your furniture isn’t the problem. It’s just wearing the wrong outfit.
We were recently working with a client on a few updates throughout her home, including new wallpaper, fabrics, and furnishings. On the list were two pieces she thought she needed to replace: an armchair for her den and a vanity chair for her daughter’s room.
But once we saw them in person, we had a different idea.
Both chairs worked. They were comfortable, the scale was right, and they fit exactly where they needed to. More importantly, they had great bones. There was no reason to start over simply because the fabric no longer worked with where the rooms were headed.
So instead of shopping for replacements, we went fabric shopping.
For the den, the existing gray chair was reupholstered in a graphic fabric that coordinates with the new wallpaper and gives the chair an entirely different presence in the room. What was once a fairly quiet, forgettable piece now feels completely intentional.
And in her daughter’s room, an existing vanity chair got the same treatment. A fresh patterned fabric, contrast welt, and that charming gathered skirt gave it a second life, and made it feel like it had been chosen specifically for the newly updated space.
That’s the thing about reupholstery: you don’t always need a new piece to get a new look.
The right fabric can completely change the personality of a chair, sofa, bench, or ottoman. A stripe can make something feel relaxed and tailored. A performance velvet can add softness and depth. A great print can turn the piece you barely noticed before into the thing that makes the entire room.
And sometimes, keeping what you already own actually gives you a more interesting room. You get to preserve the shape, comfort, or character that made the piece worth buying in the first place, while choosing a fabric that makes sense for your home now.
So before you give up on that chair in the corner, or the sofa you’ve convinced yourself has to go, take another look.
It might not need replacing.
It might just need better clothes.
